Wireless Monitoring System Tested to Reduce Patient Falls

New technologies continue to be developed to assist in surveillance and promote patient safety. One such technology, a wireless patient monitoring system, was evaluated in a medical oncology unit. The device includes a wireless mattress coverlet that provides notification if the patient attempts to get out of bed. Following implementation of the device and staff education in its use, average fall rate in the unit decreased to 3.6 falls per 1000 patient-days, an improvement of more than 25% over established goals. Staff satisfaction with device was generally positive, with a satisfaction score of 76%. The authors noted that implementation of such a device requires ongoing monitoring to ensure appropriate use and staff education.
